HDD drilling from the pit with the DJ 18 PIT
TERRA-PIT DJ 18 in action
When a guided bore must be started from a confined construction pit, the TERRA-PIT DJ 18 truly shines. This powerful pit-launched drilling rig combines compact dimensions with high push and pull force, allowing you to start drilling directly at the required pipe depth—without the need for an approach ramp or unnecessary entry angles.
With 80 kN (8 tonnes) of push and pull force, 3,000 Nm of torque, and a drilling fluid flow of up to 95 l/min at 70 bar, the TERRA-PIT DJ 18 provides the performance needed for demanding HDD projects. Depending on soil conditions, it can achieve bore lengths of up to 150 m and reaming diameters of up to 420 mm.
Direct start from the construction pit
The modular design of the TERRA-PIT DJ 18 allows it to be used directly inside the construction pit. This means the bore can begin immediately at the target depth of the future pipeline.
Unlike conventional HDD rigs, there is no need for a long approach ramp to reach the required installation depth. This saves drilling distance, time, and space—especially when working in densely built-up areas or where space is limited.
Precise pilot boring
Once the rig was set up in the pit, the pilot bore began along the planned route. The drill string was advanced meter by meter, with the drill head guided precisely to the target point.
The high push/pull force and torque of the TERRA-PIT DJ 18 ensure efficient and controlled drilling, even under challenging conditions. Separate hydraulic circuits for rotation and feed allow torque and thrust to be used simultaneously.
Reaming and pipe pullback
After the successful pilot bore, the hole was gradually enlarged to the required diameter using a reamer. The pipeline was then pulled back along the prepared bore path.
The TERRA-PIT DJ 18 demonstrates its unique advantages wherever trenchless pipe installation must be performed in tight spaces. Whether in urban areas, between existing utilities, or working directly from shafts and pits, the machine enables high-performance HDD drilling exactly where conventional rigs reach their limits.
