When challenging ground conditions meet limited space, you need a compact and powerful drilling rig. The TERRA-JET DJ 23 AT was specifically developed for guided rock drilling and is one of the most compact rock drilling rigs in its class.

Despite its compact dimensions, the rig offers impressive power reserves: 11 tonnes of thrust and pullback force, 4,000 Nm of torque, and a drilling fluid flow of up to 185 l/min. Thanks to the dual rod system, over 100 m of drill rods are carried directly on board—the ideal setup for efficient rock drilling.

Challenging uphill drilling

On this job site, the drilling path led uphill. The varying ground conditions alone placed special demands on both the machine and the drilling technique. While the bore initially passed through softer soil layers, the drilling team encountered solid rock as they progressed.

The TERRA-JET DJ 23 AT enabled a controlled transition between the different formations and reliably provided the necessary power for the subsequent rock drilling section.

Pilot drilling with a roller bit

A roller bit was used for the pilot bore. This is part of the DJ 23 AT's specialized dual rod system, allowing for efficient processing even in demanding rock formations.

Meter by meter, the drill worked its way through the changing ground conditions to the target point. Despite the combination of soft soil and rock, the bore was completed with pinpoint accuracy at the planned exit point.

Reaming and pipe installation

Following a successful pilot bore, the hole was enlarged to the required diameter using an appropriate reamer. Subsequently, the intended pipes were pulled in safely and in a controlled manner.

With bore lengths of up to 150 m, district heating pipes, among others, were successfully installed trenchlessly. The project impressively demonstrates how even demanding utility construction projects with changing ground conditions and rock can be realized efficiently.
